Reducing global GHG emissions by replicating successful sector examples

The study finds that replicating successful sectoral policies globally could reduce projected 2030 annual GHG emissions to approximately 50 GtCO2e, compared to 60 GtCO2e under current policies. The most significant reductions would occur in the electricity sector through renewable energy expansion, followed by reductions in fluorinated gases, oil and gas venting and flaring, and industrial efficiency. While this approach would significantly narrow the emissions gap with a 2°C pathway, it would not close it entirely.

• Replicating successful national policies across all world regions could reduce projected annual GHG emissions to approximately 50 GtCO2e by 2030, which is 2% above 2010 levels, compared to 60 GtCO2e in the 'current policies' scenario.
• The electricity sector offers the highest potential for emissions reductions through the expansion of renewable energy, followed by improvements in industry efficiency, the reduction of fluorinated gases, and the reduction of venting and flaring in oil and gas production.
• While replicating these policies would significantly reduce the emissions gap relative to a 2°C pathway, it would not close it completely. However, it could bring trends in buildings, industry (including fluorinated gases), passenger transport, and renewable electricity close to those of a 2°C scenario.
