Reducing global GHG emissions by replicating successful sector examples

This research paper evaluates the potential global greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions by 2030 if successful sectoral climate policies from specific countries were replicated globally using the IMAGE and GLOBIOM/G4M models.

• Replicating successful national policies across nine policy areas in all world regions could reduce projected annual GHG emission levels to approximately 50 GtCO2e by 2030, which is 2% above 2010 levels, compared to 60 GtCO2e under a 'current policies' scenario.
• The most significant emission reductions are found in the electricity sector via renewable energy expansion, followed by the reduction of fluorinated gases, the mitigation of venting and flaring in oil and gas production, and enhancements in industry efficiency.
• Global replication of these policies would significantly reduce the emissions gap relative to a 2°C pathway, specifically bringing trends in buildings, industry (including fluorinated gases), passenger transport, and renewable electricity close to those of a 2°C scenario.
