Are the G20 economies making enough progress to meet their NDC targets

A study by the NewClimate Institute comparing projected greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in G20 economies under current policies against their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) targets.

• The study identifies that while almost all G20 members are progressing with climate policy implementation, only six members—China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Russia, and Turkey—are projected to meet their unconditional NDC targets based on current policies.
• Eight G20 members—Argentina, Australia, Canada, the European Union, Republic of Korea, South Africa, and the United States—need to implement further actions or enhanced policies to reach their NDC targets, as emissions for many G20 members are projected to keep rising through 2030.
• Data for certain G20 members is limited or uncertain: Saudi Arabia lacks sufficient information, while projections for Brazil and Mexico are subject to considerable uncertainty. Specifically, Saudi Arabia and South Africa are projected to see increases in both emissions per capita and emission intensity per unit GDP by 2030 relative to 2015 levels.
