Projection of labour force for Viet Nam's energy transition

This report by the NewClimate Institute provides an initial estimate of the projected human resource demand in Viet Nam's power sector through 2050, based on the 8th National Power Development Plan (PDP8) and the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).

• The demand for direct labour in the power supply and related sectors is projected to grow from approximately 300,000 full-time employees (FTE) currently to about 500,000 FTEs by 2035 under the PDP8 scenario.
• Wind and solar technologies are expected to drive a surge in labour demand, estimated to account for more than half of the power sector's direct labour force—roughly 300,000 FTEs—by the 2030s.
• While job creation in renewable energy will exceed job losses, the types and locations of new roles will not fully align with those being phased out. Employment in new coal-fired power plants will decline quickly, whereas coal mining employment will decrease more slowly.
• The JETP scenario, which involves a more gradual build-up of wind and solar and a more modest increase in gas capacity, is projected to reduce market volatility and avoid some of the disruptive patterns seen in the PDP8 scenario.
• The JETP aims to mobilise 15.5 billion USD in public and private sector investments over a three to five year period to support the green transition.
