Assessment of the G20 members' long-term strategies

The NewClimate Institute's assessment of G20 long-term strategies finds that while most members have set net zero targets (mostly for 2050), there is a significant lack of quantitative detail regarding climate finance. France is uniquely committed to phasing out domestic fossil gas and oil exploration, and the UK is the only member including international aviation and shipping in its targets. Most members rely on carbon dioxide removal to offset residual emissions, which are expected to be 19-28% of 2019 levels by 2050.

• Of the 17 long-term strategies (LTS) analyzed, 16 include a net zero target. While 12 of these target net zero by 2050, Germany targets 2045, China and Indonesia target 2060, and India targets 2070. The UK is the only G20 member whose net zero target includes emissions from international shipping and aviation.
• G20 members' LTS show a gap in climate finance details: only six of the 17 analyzed strategies include quantitative estimates, and only five mention intentions to provide international climate finance or refer to existing commitments.
• Regarding fossil fuels and emissions, France is the only G20 member to commit in its LTS to phasing out oil and fossil gas exploration within its own territory. On average, the assessed G20 countries aim to reduce 2019 emissions by 72-81% by 2050, with 10 of the 17 LTS providing assumptions on engineered or nature-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) to offset residual emissions.
