Climate Action Tracker Global Update: Climate Summit Momentum

The Climate Action Tracker (CAT) reports that global warming estimates for 2100 have reached a record low of 2.4°C, driven by announcements from President Biden’s Leaders Summit on Climate and other pledges since September 2020. Despite this 0.2°C improvement, current projections remain above the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C limit, and a significant gap persists between targets and the policies required to achieve them.

• The Climate Action Tracker estimates that global warming by 2100 is at an all-time low of 2.4°C, reflecting a 0.2°C improvement resulting from announcements at President Biden’s Leaders Summit on Climate and other actions since September 2020.
• Under an 'Optimistic Targets' scenario that assumes full implementation of net zero targets by the US, China, and other nations, warming by 2100 could drop to 2.0°C. Currently, 131 countries, representing 73% of global greenhouse gas emissions, have adopted or are considering net zero targets.
• There is a disconnect between national targets and actual policy implementation; the 'current policies' scenario projects warming of 2.9°C. The emissions gap for 2030 between Paris pledges and 1.5°C compatible pathways has narrowed by approximately 11-14% (2.6-3.9 GtCO2e), with the largest contributions coming from China, Japan, the US, and the EU27.
