Correcting Course: The Emission Reduction Potential of International Cooperative Initiatives

The analysis finds that the full implementation of 17 major international cooperative initiatives (ICIs) could reduce global emissions in 2030 by 18 to 21 GtCO2e/year beyond current national policies. This would help align the global emissions trajectory with a 2°C-consistent pathway, although a gap remains for a 1.5°C-consistent pathway. The most significant contributions come from cities, regions, businesses, and forestry initiatives.

• The full implementation of 17 selected international cooperative initiatives could reduce global emissions in 2030 by 18 to 21 GtCO2e/year in addition to current national policies, bringing total emissions down from 60-63 GtCO2e/year to 39-44 GtCO2e/year.
• Achieving these reductions would align the global emissions trajectory with a 2°C-consistent pathway by 2030, though it would not be sufficient to reach a 1.5°C-consistent pathway.
• More than half of the potential emission reductions from ICIs are attributed to initiatives involving businesses, forestry, cities, and regions.
