Correcting Course: The Emission Reduction Potential of International Cooperative Initiatives

This research paper quantifies the potential greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions from the full implementation of 17 major international cooperative initiatives (ICIs) across eight sectors and ten major emitting economies.

• The full implementation of 17 analyzed international cooperative initiatives (ICIs) could reduce global emissions in 2030 by 18 to 21 GtCO2e/year beyond current national policies, bringing total emissions down to 39-44 GtCO2e/year from a baseline of 60 to 63 GtCO2e/year.
• Achieving the goals of these 17 initiatives would align the global emissions trajectory with a 2°C-consistent pathway by 2030, though a significant gap would still exist to reach a 1.5°C-consistent pathway.
• More than half of all possible emission reductions from ICIs are attributed to initiatives focused on businesses, forestry, cities, and regions, suggesting these areas should be primary policy priorities.
