This guide provides a framework for communities to implement a Biocultural Community Protocol (BCP) to engage with external actors, raise awareness, participate in decision-making, and resolve conflicts regarding their territories and resources.

• Biocultural Community Protocols serve as platforms for communities to initiate constructive dialogue with external actors, including government officials, companies, researchers, and NGOs, based on the community's own terms and priorities.
• Proactively notifying external actors about a BCP can stimulate positive action, prevent conflicts, and encourage transparency and accountability in both public and private sectors.
• Raising awareness about the BCP can occur at three levels: within the community to build internal cohesion; among other communities to expand social mobilization; and with the general public to create political pressure and attract support.
• Communities can use BCPs to participate in decision-making processes, specifically through impact assessments. However, these are often biased because they are conducted by consultants hired by project promoters using Western scientific methods that ignore indigenous worldviews and traditional authorities.
• The guide emphasizes the right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) as a continuous process rather than a single event. Communities have the right to seek more information, say no, or withdraw from negotiations at any stage.
• To avoid the high costs and potential negative outcomes of formal litigation, communities are encouraged to resolve conflicts through non-violent, alternative dispute resolution methods, such as using facilitators, mediators, or ombudsmen.
• The 'Fogo Process' in Newfoundland, Canada, during the 1960s, demonstrated how participatory video could be used to facilitate a two-way dialogue between fishing communities and government officials, eventually leading to a producers' cooperative and a shift in government priorities toward supporting the local economy.
• In Lamu, Kenya, communities used a BCP to demand fair participation in impact assessments for a multi-billion dollar port project, asserting their rights to self-determination and the protection of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
• The Tanchara community in northern Ghana developed a 'Community Wellbeing Impact Assessment' tool to respond to illegal gold mining and protect sacred groves, shifting the power balance between the community and project promoters.
