Defenders demands

A statement from the second annual African Environmental Defenders Regional Convening in 2024 outlining demands for the protection of environmental and land defenders, the adoption of a regional treaty, and a shift toward community-led conservation and rights-based climate solutions.

• African environmental defenders demand the creation of a legally binding regional treaty to recognize their role and require state parties to implement measures for their protection, public participation, and access to justice regarding environmental issues.
• The movement calls for a transition away from 'false solutions' and militarized conservation, advocating instead for rights-based, gender-transformative climate solutions and community-led conservation where indigenous peoples and local communities lead the management of natural resources and biodiversity.
• Demands are made for governments to reduce fossil fuel production by incentivizing renewable energy, and for both governments and companies to be held accountable for human rights abuses through investigations, prosecutions, reparations, and comprehensive redress mechanisms.
