• The project is being developed through a partnership between the Government of Kenya and a consortium including Tullow Oil Kenya B.V., Africa Oil Turkana Ltd, and Total Oil.
• The Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) process, conducted by Golder Associates and ESF Consultants, is required under the Environment Management and Coordination Act (2015). The study aims to identify positive and negative impacts and develop mitigation measures via an Environmental and Social Management Plan, with a target completion date of March 2019.
• Community members at the Boji meeting expressed significant concerns regarding the impact on pastoralist activities, specifically the loss of grazing land and potential negative effects on water pans. Other concerns included the lack of prior information from local leaders, potential social problems caused by an influx of workers, and the protection of holy shrines, graves, and herbal trees.
• Stakeholders raised questions about land ownership and compensation, noting that as pastoralists, they lack formal land ownership documents. The project team responded that the National Land Commission (NLC) and LAPSSET would handle a separate community engagement process to address land acquisition and compensation.
