Gender mainstreaming in climate change action in Côte Ivoire

Between 2018 and 2020, Côte d'Ivoire implemented several measures to mainstream gender into climate action, including the creation of a National Gender and Climate Change Strategy 2020–2024 and the inclusion of gender as a cross-cutting theme in the revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). These efforts were supported by an assessment for a Green Climate Fund (GCF) funding proposal for the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) process and the provision of national gender advisors to the Ministry of Environment.

• Côte d'Ivoire established a National Gender and Climate Change Strategy 2020–2024 with the goal that by 2030, all climate change actions in the country will account for gender equality and social inclusion.
• Gender considerations have been integrated into key climate policy documents and legal frameworks, including the revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and a draft climate change law that supports the National Gender and Climate Change Strategy.
• Institutional support for gender mainstreaming included an assessment for a Green Climate Fund (GCF) funding proposal for the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) process (approved February 2019 for 2019-2022) and the assignment of two national gender advisors to the Ministry of Environment in 2020.
