SNOW LOSS PUBLIC OPINION in 7 countries calls for fossil fuel ad ban IN WINTER SPORTS

A briefing by the New Weather Institute reporting on public opinion across seven countries, showing widespread concern for snow loss due to global warming and strong support for banning fossil fuel advertising in winter sports and the Winter Olympics.

• A clear majority of the population in all seven surveyed countries (ranging from 52% to 67%) are concerned to a high extent about the loss of snow and ice caused by global warming. Concern is highest in Italy and France, where 67% of respondents expressed high levels of concern.
• There is strong general public opposition to fossil fuel advertising in winter sports across all polled nations, with support for a ban ranging from 61% in Norway to 83% in France. Other high levels of support were recorded in the UK (77%) and Italy (77%).
• Majorities in all surveyed countries agree that the Winter Olympics specifically should stop advertising oil companies such as Eni, a sponsor of the 2026 Games. The highest agreement was in France (74%), followed by the UK (69%), Germany (65%), Canada (59%), Sweden (59%), and Norway (51%), while 64% of Italians agreed.
• Individuals who identify as fans of winter sports show even stronger opposition to high-carbon advertising than the general public. In France, 86% of fans want such advertising to stop, followed by the UK (85%), Italy (81%), Germany (78%), Canada (74%), Sweden (66%), and Norway (62%).
• Among winter sports fans, there is specific opposition to oil company sponsorship of the Winter Olympics. In France, 78% of fans want the Games to stop advertising companies like Eni, and in Italy, 68% of fans hold this view.
