Hide and Seek: Taking Account of Small Arms in Southern Africa

This document is the introduction to a monograph titled "Hide and Seek: Taking Account of Small Arms in Southern Africa," published in 2004. The report presents the results of a research project initiated in 2001 by Gun Free South Africa (GFSA) and the Centre for Conflict Resolution (CCR) to examine the trade, use, and control of small arms and light weapons (SALW) across nine southern African countries. The project aimed to identify sustainable strategies for managing proliferation and limiting misuse through a comprehensive understanding of the region's arms landscape.

• The research project focused on several core areas regarding small arms and light weapons: the size and nature of legal state-held and civilian-owned arms, the sources of illegal weapons (specifically loss and theft from legal stockpiles), factors driving civilian demand, the human impact and firearm-related crime, the legal industry, and the effectiveness of government commitment to international agreements like the SADC Protocol.
• The monograph includes nine country chapters based on research conducted by in-country researchers in Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe between 1994 and 2003.
