Address by Mr Peter Edopu, Head, ISS Nairobi Office Launch of ISS-EAPCCO Environmental Crime Project

Mr Peter Edopu of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) announced the launch of the Environmental Crime Project in Entebbe, Uganda. Developed in partnership with EAPCCO (a sub-regional INTERPOL office) and funded by the German government, the project aims to combat environmental crimes in Eastern Africa. It is part of the broader ISS Environmental Security Programme, which addresses issues such as climate change, energy security, and natural resource conflict across Sub-Saharan Africa by building a knowledge base and enhancing law enforcement capacity.

• The Environmental Crime Project is a component of the broader ISS Environmental Security Programme (ESP), which aims to address environmental and security issues in Sub-Saharan Africa. The ESP covers a diverse range of topics, including climate change, energy security, food security, pollution, natural resource conflict, and gender-related issues in environment and human security.
• The Environmental Security Programme (ESP) has four primary goals: creating a knowledge base on the link between environment, security, crime, and conflict in Sub-Saharan Africa; improving coordination and information sharing among security and environment institutions; identifying environmental acts that impact regional human security; and promoting an African perspective in global human security and environment processes.
• The Environmental Crime Project was established because environmental crimes are viewed as a major threat to human security in the Eastern African region. The project's specific objectives include the collection and publication of data on environmental crimes, monitoring and prevention efforts, improving the legislative and institutional capacity of law enforcement, conducting public awareness and community outreach, and engaging in collaborative processes at national, regional, and international levels.
• The project is a partnership between the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), a research institute focused on organized crime, corruption, and law enforcement in Africa, and EAPCCO, a sub-regional INTERPOL office that assists national police in preventing cross-border crime. The project is supported financially by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany.
