A joint declaration from the European Commission and the African Union Commission following their fourth College-to-College meeting on 1 October 2008 in Brussels. • The commissions agreed to strengthen energy cooperation by focusing on regional integration, upgrading energy infrastructure and interconnections between Africa and the EU, promoting private sector investment, and exploring Africa's renewable energy potential.
• Efforts to combat climate change and environmental degradation include a planned joint AU-EU Declaration on Climate Change in November 2008 and the implementation of the Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA) in Africa. Additionally, a scoping study will be launched for the Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel Initiative to fight land degradation and aridity.
• Cooperation on science, technology, and the information society involves 19 lighthouse projects, including the African Internet Exchange System (AXIS) for regional internet infrastructure and the AfricaConnect project to extend the European GEANT2 research and education network to sub-Saharan Africa.
