In their words: Preparing police for peace missions

A case study detailing the impact of Institute for Security Studies (ISS) training on police officers from the Malawi Police Service preparing for deployment in UN, AU, and regional peace missions.

• In 2014, the ISS Training for Peace programme trained over 60 officers from the Malawi Police Service, with women comprising 40% of the group. Commissioner Richard Luhanga attributes the fact that Malawi has not suffered a serious casualty on a UN-AU mission to this training.
• The ISS training curriculum for police officers covers a broad range of operational and ethical skills, including human rights, gender awareness, child protection, and community engagement, alongside practical survival skills such as first aid, 4x4 driving, navigation, and responding to kidnapping.
• The Malawi Police Service valued the adult-based training methodology and detailed materials provided by the ISS. The programme also trained many officers as instructors, increasing their responsibility and impact during peace missions.
