Small Arms And Light Weapons In Africa: Illicit Proliferation, Circulation And Trafficking

This document describes a book compiled by Eunice Reyneke in October 2000, which presents the proceedings of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) Experts Meeting and International Consultations held from May to June 2000. The publication was intended for distribution at a Governments Ministerial Meeting in Bamako, Mali, from 30 November to 1 December 2000.

• While small arms and light weapons are not the primary cause of criminality and conflict, their proliferation and accumulation can intensify violence, escalate conflicts, undermine peace agreements, and negatively impact social stability, democracy, good governance, crime, and development.
• The volume aims to share the recommendations, sentiments, and arguments of various international and African stakeholders regarding solutions to the problems caused by small arms and light weapons, while documenting the positions declared by several African governments during expert meetings.
