Sino-African Union cooperation in peace and security in Africa

This report describes an international conference organized by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Ethiopia to examine and enhance cooperation between China and the African Union (AU) regarding peace and security in Africa.

• China has historically supported African nations through healthcare, educational opportunities, and liberation struggles, and more recently provided the building for the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
• China's foreign policy now views Africa as occupying a strategic position, leading the People's Republic of China to support the AU in peace and security efforts, specifically the hybrid United Nations AU Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
• Despite a general decline in conflict levels, security challenges persist for the AU and its member states, including armed crime, politically motivated violence, and ongoing insurrection.
• The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Ethiopia held a one-day international conference in Addis Ababa to identify challenges and propose policy options for future China-Africa cooperation in peace and security, involving scholars, policy makers, and civil society.
