Exploring alternative approaches for managing electoral injustice in Africa

This study evaluates the role of traditional and enlightened women's movements in managing electoral crises in Nigeria and Kenya, contrasting informal traditional methods—such as sex strikes and the display of bare breasts by elderly women—against formal, gendered peace processes in African transitional democracies.

• The study identifies three primary weaknesses in African conflict management: a focus on formal peace processes that undermine informal ones, the gendered nature of peace processes which exclude women, and the endemic nature of electoral violence in transitional democracies that lack a culture of electoral integrity.
• The research compares traditional and enlightened women's movements in Nigeria and Kenya, specifically evaluating the effectiveness and regional applicability of traditional methods such as sex strikes and the display of bare breasts by elderly women to negotiate electoral justice and manage political conflicts.
