A critical look at the 2011 North African revolutions and their implications

This document is an introductory report from the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) regarding a conference held on 31 May 2011. The conference aimed to analyze the 2011 North African revolutions and generate policy responses to peace and security challenges to support democratization and human security in the region.

• The conference held on 31 May 2011 was designed to help African policy makers and stakeholders create informed policies for managing crises in North Africa during a period of significant social and political unrest.
• The events in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya, along with unrest in Algeria, Morocco, and Djibouti, were identified as having the potential to spread to other parts of the African continent.
• The conference sought to address peace and security challenges in North Africa to contribute to sustained democratization and human security, involving experts from the region, the African Union (AU), the European Union (EU), and the League of Arab States (LAS).
