Personnel fatalities in United Nations missions, by year, up to 30 June 2008

This fact sheet, published by the Institute for Security Studies and based on data from the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), provides a yearly breakdown of personnel fatalities in United Nations missions from 1948 up to 30 June 2008.

• Between 1948 and 30 June 2008, there were a total of 2,482 personnel fatalities in United Nations missions. The vast majority of these occurred within missions under the command of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), which accounted for 2,403 deaths.
• The data categorizes fatalities into three groups: DPKO (peacekeeping missions under DPKO command), Non-DPKO (special political, peacebuilding field missions, and other UN peace offices under the Department of Field Support and the Department of Political Affairs), and Peacekeeping (fatalities of the UN Secretariat and the Special Committee on the Balkans that do not fit the other two categories).
• Fatalities are defined broadly to include losses resulting from illness, accidents, malicious acts, or other unspecified reasons.
• The highest single-year fatality count recorded in the table was in 1993, with 252 total deaths, the majority of which (251) were in DPKO missions.
• As of the reporting period, seven of the 16 active peacekeeping missions were located in Africa.
