MINING AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE

The IISD Mining and Sustainable Development Initiative works to ensure mining contributes to economic and social development without compromising the environment. It employs a shared-value approach to maximize intergenerational benefits and ecological restoration. The initiative provides legal advice, economic analysis, and capacity building for governments and companies, with specific recent work in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and Canada regarding contract negotiations, policy frameworks, and climate risk management.

• The IISD advocates for a "shared-value approach" to mining that extends beyond company taxes and dividends to include in-country economic benefits and job creation through company expenditures on goods and services.
• The initiative provides capacity building and training for government officials in Asia and Africa to improve the negotiation of contracts with investors.
• IISD has supported the implementation of the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development’s Mining Policy Framework in Africa and the Caribbean, focusing on artisanal and small-scale mining and socio-economic benefit optimization.
• The initiative has conducted analysis for the International Council on Mining and Metals regarding how carbon-focused economic instruments affect the competitiveness of mining operations.
