Netley–Libau Nutrient-Bioenergy Project
Summary
The Netley–Libau Nutrient-Bioenergy project demonstrates a method to improve the health of Lake Winnipeg and the Netley–Libau Marsh by harvesting cattails (Typha spp.). These plants absorb phosphorus from the water and sediment; harvesting them permanently removes these nutrients from the ecosystem, preventing eutrophication. The harvested biomass is compressed into fuel pellets, cubes, or logs to displace fossil fuels for heat and electricity, potentially generating carbon credits. Additionally, the ash from burning the biomass can be recycled as phosphorus-rich fertilizer, and the removal of dead plant matter improves wildlife habitat by allowing more sunlight to reach the marsh.
