Tomorrow Needs Us Today: Resilience

This fact sheet from the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) describes the work of the NAP Global Network in supporting developing countries to create and implement National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) to build resilience against climate change.

• The NAP Global Network, whose secretariat is hosted by IISD and established in 2014, assists vulnerable countries in developing and implementing National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) to increase the resilience of economies, ecosystems, and communities.
• The NAP Global Network has achieved several quantitative milestones in supporting climate adaptation, including providing technical assistance to 40 countries, training over 2,700 people on climate change adaptation, and strengthening the capacities of more than 200 government institutions in adaptation planning.
• The network currently connects more than 1,200 participants from over 140 countries, with over 120 developing countries having already begun the process of adaptation planning.
• IISD provides specific support to governments through embedded expertise, facilitating the sharing of effective solutions between countries, providing targeted analysis for evidence-based decisions, and offering operations and communications support.
• The document highlights specific country-level interventions: in Ethiopia, support focuses on social protection systems, climate-smart agriculture, potable water access, and gender equality; in Colombia, the focus is on piloting early warning systems to mitigate the effects of drought and heavy rains on sewage systems and household water supplies.
