The Scaling Urban Nature-based Solutions for Climate Adaptation in Sub-Saharan Africa (SUNCASA) project

The SUNCASA project, funded with USD 22 million by Global Affairs Canada and managed by IISD and WRI, implements nature-based solutions (NbS) to combat flooding, heat, and biodiversity loss in Dire Dawa, Kigali, and Johannesburg. The project targets 2.2 million beneficiaries, with a specific focus on gender equality and the empowerment of marginalized groups in climate adaptation planning.

• SUNCASA is a USD 22 million project funded by Global Affairs Canada through the Partnering for the Climate Program and is jointly managed by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and the World Resources Institute (WRI).
• The project aims to benefit 2.2 million people living in high-flood-risk areas, with a target that at least 50% of beneficiaries are women to address gender gaps in climate adaptation.
• In Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, the project focuses on urban and rural kebeles to address flash floods, soil erosion, and water scarcity through groundwater recharge, river buffer zones, and agroforestry.
• In Kigali, Rwanda, SUNCASA will rehabilitate micro-catchments across the Nyabarongo River and establish vegetated buffer zones to stabilize gullies and protect households from landslides and flooding.
• In Johannesburg, South Africa, the project targets the Jukskei River catchment to remove invasive species, rehabilitate riverbanks, and plant indigenous trees to improve water security and reduce flood risk.
