Reducing Poverty: Voluntary sustainability standards can support smallholder farmers

Additionally, VSSs often fail to adequately integrate gender equality, specifically regarding women's access to markets, training, and land.
• Practical evidence suggests VSSs can improve access to resources through increased crop income, better prices, and the creation of social capital via producer organizations. Some farmers receive premiums of 10% to 30% for sustainably grown products. However, the impact on net household income remains unclear, and there is limited evidence regarding gender-equitable resource access.
• While VSSs support power and voice through grievance mechanisms and labour rights compliance, small-scale producers are frequently excluded from the actual governance of these standards, lacking direct involvement in decision-making and access to information.
• Smallholder access to VSS-compliant markets is hindered by several limiting factors, including high upfront investment costs, prohibitive certification costs, limited access to financial services, poor infrastructure (roads, water, energy), and unfair buyer practices.
• The most critical enabling condition for VSS success is a supporting ecosystem comprising government agencies, buyers, certifiers, and development organizations that provide training and market information. Other essential factors include direct links between farmers and buyers to bypass intermediaries, price incentives, and producer organizations.
