Sustainable Asset Valuation Assessment of Dire Dawa, Ethiopia (USD)

This fact sheet presents a Sustainable Asset Valuation (SAVi) assessment of nature-based solutions (NbS) implemented by SUNCASA in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, projecting economic, social, and environmental benefits between 2025 and 2050.

• SUNCASA's nature-based solutions (NbS) in Dire Dawa are projected to generate a return of USD 1.36 in combined economic, social, and environmental benefits for every U.S. dollar invested. With a total investment of USD 2 million, the project expects cumulative net benefits of USD 731,000 over a time horizon from 2025 to 2050.
• The project expects to save USD 2.28 million through avoided costs, including USD 1.35 million in infrastructure repair costs from flash flood damage and USD 930,000 in climate-related health expenses (comprising USD 239,000 from floods, USD 474,000 from water pollution, and USD 217,000 from urban heat). These interventions, including restoring the Dechatu River catchment and expanding green spaces, aim to benefit 220,000 residents.
• The NbS strategy includes afforestation of 350 hectares with 750,000 trees, establishing 83 hectares of buffer zones with 182,500 trees and grasses, agroforestry across 385 hectares with 420,000 trees, and urban greening with 12,500 trees. Additional benefits include USD 471,000 from carbon sequestration (up to 175,000 tonnes CO2 stored) and USD 390,000 from the creation of 6,900 new jobs, plus USD 81,000 in other added benefits.
