• Mine closure regulations are critically underdeveloped; current laws focus on land reclamation rather than the technical management of infrastructure like tailings dams and waste rock dumps, and there is significant uncertainty regarding financial assurance mechanisms.
• The government is addressing legacy environmental issues from the Soviet era, specifically regarding uranium waste, with support from international organizations like the OSCE and UNDP.
