Manitoba’s Hudson Bay Lowlands

The Hudson Bay Lowlands in northeastern Manitoba, covering over 67,000 square kilometres, provide a minimum of CAD 247.7 million in annual economic value and store an estimated 7 billion tonnes of soil organic carbon valued at CAD 1.2 trillion. The region supports over 250 wildlife species and generates CAD 131 million in tourism revenue. Five Indigenous Nations are working to establish an Indigenous Protected Area to safeguard the region, which would help Canada and Manitoba meet their goal of protecting 30% of terrestrial and inland water areas by 2030.

• The Hudson Bay Lowlands in Manitoba provide a minimum of CAD 247.7 million in annual economic value through biodiversity conservation, hunting, tourism, and mental health, and generate CAD 131 million specifically in tourism revenue for northern Manitoba.
• The region is a globally significant carbon pool, containing an estimated 7 billion tonnes of soil organic carbon with a storage value of CAD 1.2 trillion.
• Five Indigenous Nations—York Factory First Nation, Fox Lake Cree Nation, Tataskweyak Cree Nation, War Lake First Nation, and Shamattawa First Nation—are collaborating to conserve the region as an Indigenous Protected Area.
• Because the Hudson Bay Lowlands cover approximately 10% of Manitoba's landmass, their conservation would significantly help the provincial and federal governments reach their target of protecting at least 30% of terrestrial and inland water areas by 2030.
