Climate Change and energy team

This fact sheet describes the activities and strategic objectives of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) Climate Change and Energy Team as of October 2001. The team focuses on mitigation strategies, adaptation, capacity building for developing countries, and the integration of energy policy into the climate change agenda.

• The IISD's 'Inuit Observations on Climate Change' project used the local knowledge and observations of indigenous populations to demonstrate that the impacts of climate change are already being felt.
• IISD is collaborating with the Stockholm Environment Institute and IUCN – The World Conservation Union to create a tool kit of conservation strategies and use case studies to argue that conservation serves as an adaptation strategy to protect biodiversity and human systems from climate-related disasters.
• To support developing countries in international climate negotiations and national planning, IISD coordinates the Climate Change Knowledge Network (CCKN), which provides a resource compendium, a forum for dialogue, and workshops to improve negotiator skills.
• IISD is expanding its focus to include energy policy, with a draft continental energy strategy scheduled for February 2002, and promotes the use of renewable energy and the stewardship of finite natural resources through dialogue with the oil, gas, and mining industries.
