Herramienta para la Identificación Comunitaria de Riesgos - en Resumen Adaptación y Medios de Vida

This fact sheet describes CRiSTAL (Community Risk Identification Tool - Adaptation and Livelihoods), a project management and planning tool designed to integrate climate change adaptation and risk reduction into community-level work. Developed by a consortium including the IUCN, IISD, SEI, and Intercooperation, the tool uses a structured analytical framework implemented via Microsoft Excel to help planners understand the links between climate threats, local livelihoods, and project activities.

• CRiSTAL is a project management and planning tool that provides an analytical framework to help users understand how climate threats affect project areas and local livelihoods, how people respond to these impacts, and which livelihood resources are most critical for coping. It further analyzes how project activities affect these resources and suggests adjustments to increase their availability or access.
• The tool is structured into two modules and four logical steps. Module 1 covers 'Climate Context and Livelihoods' (Step 1: Climate Context and Step 2: Livelihoods), while Module 2 covers 'Adaptation Planning and Management' (Step 3: Project Impacts and Step 4: Project Adjustments). The process combines scientific climate data for the initial context with information gathered through community consultations and stakeholder discussions, all recorded in Microsoft Excel.
• CRiSTAL was developed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), and Intercooperation. It was created to help project agents design activities that promote adaptation and minimize maladaptation by understanding the connection between climate and livelihoods.
• Since its launch in 2007, CRiSTAL has been applied in more than 20 countries. Initial field tests for natural resource management projects were conducted in Mali, Bangladesh, Tanzania, Nicaragua, and Sri Lanka.
