Responsible Agricultural Investment for Building Robust Legal and Policy Frameworks

This fact sheet describes the advisory and capacity development services provided by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) to help low- and middle-income governments and regional bodies establish legal and policy frameworks for responsible private sector investment in agriculture.

• Private sector and foreign investment in agriculture can provide capital, jobs, technology, and market linkages to aid development, but poor implementation can lead to the degradation of natural resources, violation of land tenure rights, and threats to local food security.
• IISD provides free advisory services and capacity development to low-income governments and regional bodies, focusing on areas such as model contracts for large-scale farmland, regional investment guidelines, contract farming templates, and policies for attracting foreign direct investment. These services include training workshops, peer-to-peer learning, and cross-sector policy dialogues, though IISD does not represent governments in disputes or live contract negotiations.
