Maximizing the Utilization of ASEAN-Led Free Trade Agreements: The potential roles of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises

This document consists of two distinct sections: a policy brief introduction regarding the utilization of ASEAN-led Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) by micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and a commentary on the United Kingdom's accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and its potential public health implications.

• There are concerns that micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) within the ASEAN region have not significantly benefited from free trade agreements (FTAs), with various studies indicating these agreements are seldom utilized by such enterprises.
• The United Kingdom has become the first new member to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) since the agreement's entry into force in 2018.
• The CPTPP is an active agreement among 11 Pacific Rim countries, and because it evolved from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (which was shaped by the US before its 2017 withdrawal), many of its provisions are similar to US-negotiated free trade deals. The text asserts that the deal poses a major threat to public health and requires a health impact assessment, noting a lack of discussion regarding the public health implications of the UK's accession.
