Sustainable Asset Valuation of Coastal Wetland Restoration in Chile

The report assesses the restoration of 579 hectares of wetlands in Chile's Biobío region, finding that nature-based infrastructure (NBI) is economically viable across all modelled scenarios. With a maximum benefit-cost ratio of 1.30, the project is projected to generate up to USD 58.74 million in avoided flood damage and rental income loss, while providing significant social value through recreation and carbon storage.

• Nature-based infrastructure in the Rocuant–Andalién system is economically viable, with all six modelled scenarios yielding benefit-cost ratios above 1.0. The most optimistic scenario provides a return of USD 1.30 for every dollar invested, resulting in net benefits of USD 42.45 million.
• The restoration project can prevent up to USD 58.74 million in losses related to flood damage and rental income over a 26-year period.
• Beyond flood mitigation, the restoration provides substantial social and environmental value, including USD 78.64 million from improved nature access and recreation, and carbon storage benefits between USD 1.37 million and 4.57 million.
• The project involves the restoration of 579 hectares of wetlands in the Biobío region, utilizing green and hybrid solutions like rain gardens and re-naturalized riverbanks to benefit more than 31,000 local residents.
