BIOFUELS - AT WHAT COST?

This document is an introductory text for a 2010 report by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) that aims to quantify government support for ethanol and biodiesel within the European Union since 2007.

• Government support for biofuels has increased significantly as policymakers attempt to decrease dependence on petroleum and other fossil fuels, though the total scale of this support has previously remained undocumented.
• The report serves as an update to a 2007 study by Kutas et al. and focuses on quantifying all support measures for ethanol and biodiesel across almost all European Union Member States from 2007 onwards.
