Investor Perspectives on Accelerating Growth in the Indian EV Ecosystem

This report analyzes the drivers and barriers to investment within India's electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, based on consultations with experts, policymakers, and investors, as well as an online survey.

• India has successfully incentivized consumer demand for electrified two-wheel and three-wheel vehicles and is starting to increase demand for buses and four-wheel electrified vehicles.
• While China currently dominates battery manufacturing and India is a minor player, India has introduced policy schemes to incentivize domestic production. Investors and companies believe there is significant growth potential in this area to increase EV adoption and domestic production.
• To reach desired growth scales, India must address several obstacles: insufficient charging infrastructure, consumer financing challenges, supply chain shortages, labor force skill gaps, and a lack of complementarity between federal and state policies.
• Experts suggest that adopting battery swapping, which is already receiving government policy support, could further expand EV adoption and demand.
