Migration and Conservation in the Bale Mountains Ecosystem

This report assesses the impact of human migration on the Bale Mountains ecosystem, highlighting how migration accelerates land conversion and the overexploitation of natural resources, while proposing response strategies to protect conservation and traditional livelihoods.

• Human migration is a significant driver of land conversion and the overexploitation of key natural resources within the Bale Mountains ecosystem, which negatively impacts traditional livelihoods and conservation efforts.
• While land conversion occurs at a slower pace without migrant influxes due to population growth, climate change, and shifting socioeconomic expectations, migration accelerates and intensifies these inevitable livelihood changes and land conversion processes.
• The research was conducted by IISD, the Conservation Development Centre, and the Frankfurt Zoological Society with support from the MacArthur Foundation as part of the Migration and Conservation in the Great Lakes Region project.
