Restoring Wetland Ecosystems in La Mojana, Colombia

The report assesses the economic viability of flood mitigation strategies in Colombia's La Mojana region, comparing grey infrastructure, nature-based infrastructure (NBI), and sustainable agriculture. It finds that all considered interventions are investment-worthy, with the potential to avoid over USD 1.26 billion in damages over 30 years.

• All evaluated infrastructure interventions to reduce flooding in La Mojana are considered investment-worthy, with benefit-to-cost ratios between 2.07 and 26.1.
• The combination of sustainable agriculture, channel and wetland rehabilitation, and additional dam construction could prevent more than USD 1.26 billion (COP 6131 billion) in damages to agriculture, roads, and buildings over a 30-year period.
• The most significant economic benefits from flood protection investments stem from avoided damages to roads and buildings, as well as increased labour income and revenue from agricultural production resulting from improved water management.
