Restoring Wetland Ecosystems in La Mojana, Colombia

This report provides a Sustainable Asset Valuation (SAVi) of flood mitigation strategies in La Mojana, Colombia. It finds that all considered interventions, including dam construction and nature-based wetland restoration, are investment worthy with benefit-to-cost ratios up to 26.1, potentially avoiding USD 1.26 billion in damages over 30 years.

• All analyzed infrastructure interventions to reduce flooding in La Mojana are considered investment worthy, with benefit-to-cost ratios between 2.07 and 26.1. These interventions include reinforcing and building 50 km of new dam along the Cauca River, nature-based infrastructure (NBI) involving channel restoration and wetland rehabilitation, and the implementation of sustainable agriculture practices.
• Combining additional dam construction, sustainable agriculture, and the rehabilitation of channels and wetlands could prevent over USD 1.26 billion (COP 6131 billion) in damages to agriculture, roads, and buildings over a 30-year period.
• The most significant economic benefits from flood protection investments are the avoidance of damages to roads and buildings, as well as increased labour income and revenue from agricultural production resulting from improved water management.
