Sustainable Asset Valuation of the Recovery of the Bogotá River, Colombia

The SAVi assessment of the Bogotá River recovery project demonstrates that hybrid infrastructure—integrating nature-based interventions like wetland restoration with conventional systems—generated USD 349 million in net benefits. The project achieved a return of USD 1.27 for every USD 1 invested, primarily driven by USD 828 million in avoided flood damages and USD 554 million in value from improved water quality and ecosystem services.

• Hybrid infrastructure combining grey systems and nature-based infrastructure (NBI) provided a positive return on investment, yielding USD 1.27 in benefits for every USD 1 spent and a total of USD 349 million in net benefits over the project's lifetime.
• The use of NBI to restore wetlands and river functions significantly lowered flood risk, which prevented an estimated USD 828 million in damages to infrastructure, businesses, and homes throughout the Bogotá River basin.
• The largest portion of total benefits came from improvements in ecosystem services and water quality generated by NBI, which provided USD 554 million in value and enhanced urban resilience and quality of life.
