Addressing Climate Change Through Integrated Responses: Linking adaptation and mitigation

This policy brief advocates for integrating climate change adaptation and mitigation into a coherent planning and implementation process. It argues that siloed approaches can create negative trade-offs, whereas identifying synergies between the two can lead to more effective, long-term impacts and broader political support.

• Climate action strategies that treat mitigation and adaptation as separate silos can result in negative trade-offs that hinder overall progress. To improve the coherence and effectiveness of climate responses, it is necessary to effectively link these two approaches and assess their synergies and trade-offs.
• Sustainable development, mitigation, and adaptation are interconnected and share common themes and objectives. This interconnectedness provides a basis for countries to align their national policy processes and implement joint activities that offer common solutions to climate challenges.
