Integrating Gender Equality and Mine Closure: Actions for governments

This report examines the intersection of gender equality and mine closure, highlighting how women in mining communities often face disproportionate negative impacts and limited benefits. It provides policy recommendations for governments to integrate gender considerations into closure practices to prevent increased social and economic vulnerability for women.

• Mine closure can lead to increased social, economic, and domestic vulnerability for women, particularly due to the outmigration of men and general social upheaval following job losses. Specific negative consequences include higher crime rates, prostitution, food insecurity, poor nutrition, and an increase in domestic and care responsibilities.
• While mine operators are primarily responsible for closure implementation, governments should establish regulations and standards.
