Alignment to Advance Climate-Resilient Development | Country Case Study: Sri Lanka

This case study examines Sri Lanka's efforts to align national policy processes across the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement, and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, highlighting the role of centralized ministerial leadership and iterative policy updates.

• Sri Lanka's existing policy documents already establish connections between disaster risk reduction, climate change, and sustainable development.
• The iterative processes for updating the national adaptation plan (NAP) and the nationally determined contribution (NDC) provide critical opportunities to improve alignment between the two processes.
• Alignment is simplified when a single entity, such as the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment, manages the policy processes for both climate change and sustainable development.
• Aligning processes and systems, specifically sub-national planning and monitoring & evaluation systems, can lead to significant efficiencies.
