Enhancing Biodiversity Co-Benefits From Nature-Based Solutions for Adaptation in Practice

This document introduces a set of case studies designed to help adaptation practitioners and planners ensure that nature-based solutions (NbS) for climate change adaptation deliver measurable biodiversity co-benefits and support community livelihoods.

• Nature-based solutions (NbS) for adaptation that protect biodiversity and ecosystems are essential for sustaining livelihoods and supporting community adaptation to climate change, such as using wetlands to absorb floodwaters.
• To successfully deliver biodiversity co-benefits—defined as multiple wins for biodiversity and ecosystem functioning—projects must be designed from the beginning to provide measurable benefits for ecosystem health.
• The document presents two specific case studies: one focusing on the protection and restoration of mangroves by civil society organizations to improve coastal resilience in Grenada, and another examining urban biological corridors in Costa Rica to improve biodiversity and city sustainability.
