Sustainable Asset Valuation of the Benefits of Nature-Based Infrastructure in Kenya

The report evaluates the economic and environmental benefits of nature-based infrastructure (NBI) in Kenya, specifically within the Integrated Natural Resources Management Programme (INReMP). It finds that NBI investments yield a return of USD 1.71 to 1.91 for every dollar spent, with the highest gains coming from agroforestry and drought mitigation.

• Kenya's 'water tower' ecosystems, comprising forests in the mountains, cover less than 2% of the country's land area but provide nearly 75% of its water, though they have been severely degraded by deforestation, overgrazing, and informal settlements.
• The Integrated Natural Resources Management Programme (INReMP), supported by IFAD, targets 100,000 hectares to benefit 100,000 households and nearly 600,000 people through climate-smart agriculture, clean energy, and water storage protection.
• An analysis of NBI interventions—including 13,500 ha of agroforestry, 20,000 ha of reforestation, 13,900 ha of rangeland rehabilitation, and 14,900 ha of wetland restoration—shows a return of USD 1.71 to 1.91 for every USD 1 invested.
• The highest economic returns from NBI are generated by agroforestry, producing USD 167–168.1 million in fruit and timber revenue over 25 years, and drought mitigation, which avoids costs between USD 67.3–105.4 million.
