Assessing Green Industrial Policy: The India experience

This report, part of a series on green industrial policy (GIP), examines the wind and solar sectors in India to provide research for developing cost-effective policies for green industries.

• Green industrial policy (GIP) is defined as government efforts to achieve national economic excellence in key green economy sectors to create domestic firms that are competitive globally. While similar to traditional industrial policy, GIP is distinguished by the potential for global environmental benefits resulting from private sector competition and innovation.
• An analysis of India's policies for increasing the share of renewables in its energy mix indicates that policy has been more successful in supporting 'green' elements than 'industrial' elements. The most evident impacts have been in the areas of GHG emission abatement, avoided health costs, and energy access and security, whereas the industrial policy component has performed poorly by comparison.
