2021 Must Mark the End of International Support to Coal, Oil, and Gas

A statement by over 200 civil society organizations calling for an immediate end to international public finance for coal, oil, and gas to align with the 1.5°C warming limit and the Paris Agreement.

• More than 200 civil society organizations from over 40 countries are urging world leaders to terminate international public finance for fossil fuels to enable a just transition and free up resources for clean energy.
• G20 nations provide significantly more public funding to fossil fuels than to clean energy, with annual fossil fuel finance reaching USD 77 billion compared to USD 28 billion for clean energy.
• The United Kingdom became the first major economy in March 2021 to stop trade and development support for coal, oil, and gas. Other institutions implementing restrictions include the European Investment Bank, the French Development Agency, and the Dutch development bank FMO.
• The organizations argue that centralized gas power is unnecessary for energy access in the Global South, where wind and solar are increasingly cost-competitive and avoid the risk of stranded fossil fuel assets.
• Ahead of COP 26 in Glasgow, the signatories demand that governments and public finance institutions rule out new international public finance for the entire fossil fuel value chain, close indirect finance loopholes, and prioritize grant-based finance and debt relief for low-income countries.
