Preparing for Climate Change in the Prairie Provinces

This briefing summarizes a joint survey conducted in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba during 2020–21 to assess the climate adaptation priorities and progress of municipalities and Indigenous communities in the Prairie provinces.

• A high majority of surveyed communities in the Prairie provinces have experienced unusual extreme weather or weather-related events over the last ten years, with over 80% of respondents reporting such occurrences.
• There is a significant gap between the awareness of climate change and the implementation of formal planning; only about 5% of responding communities have finished a formal adaptation strategy or plan, and only about 8% have completed a climate change risk and vulnerability assessment.
• Communities, particularly smaller municipalities, face substantial barriers to climate preparation, including a lack of financial resources and limited staff skills and time.
• While most surveyed communities are concerned about the effects of a changing climate, only approximately one in three are currently taking steps to prepare for these impacts.
