Sustainable Asset Valuation of Restoring the Mallorquín Swamp, Colombia

This report presents a sustainable asset valuation (SAVi) assessment of mangrove restoration in the Mallorquín Swamp in Barranquilla, Colombia, comparing nature-based infrastructure (NBI) against grey infrastructure alternatives over a 20-year period.

• The assessment concludes that nature-based infrastructure (NBI) in the Mallorquín Swamp is more cost-effective and provides greater societal value than grey infrastructure alternatives, making it preferable from a financing perspective.
• Restoring the Mallorquín Swamp provides multiple climate adaptation and economic benefits, including the mitigation of flooding and erosion, and the generation of income through ecotourism, which enhances the investment's net value.
• The study utilized a combination of a system dynamics model and spatially explicit analysis to conduct an integrated cost-benefit analysis of the monetized social, economic, and environmental outcomes of restoration over a 20-year timeframe.
