Review of Current and Planned Adaptation Action in Kenya

This report provides an overview of climate risks and adaptation efforts in Kenya, detailing the national policy framework and the challenges associated with vulnerability in arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs).

• Kenya is developing a comprehensive policy framework to manage climate change, which includes the creation of a climate change bill, the establishment of a National Climate Change Secretariat, and the finalization of the National Climate Change Response Strategy and the National Climate Change Action Plan (2013–2017).
• Kenya's vulnerability to climate change is driven by factors such as water scarcity, an expanding population, gender inequalities, multidimensional poverty, and a high reliance on rain-fed agriculture, with particular impact in the arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs).
• While adaptation actions are being implemented in the water, livestock, and agriculture sectors, there is a need for more focus on infrastructure and tourism, as well as improved capacity for the 47 county governments to implement adaptation actions under the decentralized system.
