A Value on the Priceless: Ecological goods and services generated in the Seal River Watershed

This report evaluates the economic value of ecosystem benefits in the Seal River Watershed of Northern Manitoba, Canada, highlighting its role in biodiversity conservation and climate mitigation through Indigenous-led stewardship.

• The Seal River Watershed, a pristine region in Northern Manitoba not affected by forestry, industrial development, or dams, provides ecosystem goods and services valued at a minimum of CAD 214 million every year.
• Protecting the Seal River Watershed as an Indigenous Protected Area (IPA)—led by the Sayisi Dene First Nation with support from Inuit, Dene, and Cree neighbors—would contribute 0.5% toward Canada's protected areas targets.
• The value of the watershed's ecosystem services is expected to rise alongside the global decline of biodiversity and intact forest ecosystems, making its protection critical for climate resiliency, mitigation, and biodiversity conservation.
