Sustainable Asset Valuation of Land Restoration and Climate-Smart Agriculture in Burkina Faso

This report presents an integrated cost-benefit analysis by the NBI Global Resource Centre on the use of nature-based infrastructure (NBI) to combat land degradation and desertification in Burkina Faso, highlighting significant economic returns and socioeconomic benefits.

• Nature-based and hybrid interventions in Burkina Faso outperform grey infrastructure alternatives, providing a return of USD 14.8 in benefits for every USD 1 invested.
• The implementation of NBI in Burkina Faso generates an avoided cost of USD 28.1 million by increasing carbon storage, which supports climate change mitigation and creates opportunities for carbon credit financing.
• Burkina Faso faces severe climate impacts, including extreme rainfall, flooding, and prolonged droughts, resulting in 46% of arable land being degraded. Land degradation occurs at a rate of 105,000 to 250,000 hectares annually, contributing to a surge in displacement rates of over 7,000% since 2018.
• A proposed land restoration project targeting the Sahel, Boucle du Mouhoun, Eastern, and Cascades regions aims to regenerate 37% of Burkina Faso's land. This initiative is expected to benefit over 26,000 households, indirectly aid over 600,000 individuals, and support nearly 8,000 women through gender-responsive NBI.
• NBI contributes to regional stability by reducing the potential for violence and conflict and preventing the displacement of people through the provision of food security and reliable income sources.
